Reconstructive recovery usually requires support, lift, and shaping of the breast in addition to easy on and off garments. Sometimes extra compression and drain bulb compatibility are also needed. Finally, depending on if the patient had her nipples removed, giving her the options of adhesive nipples may help ease her into her new appearance.

Aesthetic flat closure recovery garments should have a front without cups to fit against the flat reconstructed chest wall. Sometimes the procedure may require drain bulbs. Sometimes the patient may want to have a temporary foam or lightweight puff to slip into their garment to give the appearance of fullness without the discomfort of a silicone breast form.

Recovery garments worn after a mastectomy should provide compression against the operated side and if unilateral, still be able to accommodate any remaining breast tissue on the unaffected side. Having a front-closure also makes for an easy on and off. During early days after surgery having drain bulb compatibility and pocketed cups for puffs may need to be considered for the garment.

Lymph node removal recovery leaves limited mobility in the arms and soreness around the axilla. Garments should be soft and supportive under the arm as well as easy to put on and take off. Drain bulb support may also need to be compatible with the garment.
