The 3 surgeries represented here usually find optimal fit with our breast form product line. Our breast form product line is best for women looking to replace total fullness in the bra cup after breast surgeries like a simple mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, or radical mastectomy.

If you have more tissue or a small breast remaining on your chest wall, our shaper product line may be your better option.

Excess skin remaining on chest wall, though not necessarily a breast

Removal of the breast and some of the surrounding affected tissue–may include removal of some lymph nodes as well.

Mostly flat surgical side with no remaining breast or tissue, usually a result of a simple mastectomy

The entire breast is removed in this surgery, but the pectoralis major muscle is left intact. No lymph nodes are removed.

Mostly a concave chest wall with some ribs creating contours on surgical side, due to a radical mastectomy

Sometimes called a Halsted Radical, this surgery is the removal of the breast tissue and surrounding tissue frequently including the pectoral muscle and lymph nodes.

FAQs

about breast forms

Breast forms help restore balance to your skeletal and muscular physiology. When natural weight is removed from your body, the body shifts to accommodate this lesser weight. In the case of mastectomy, this shift can lead to shoulder, neck, and spine problems.

You can be fitted for a post-surgical breast form immediately following surgery. Many women like these because they help restore some normalcy during the healing process. After you are healed, your doctor will write you a prescription for a silicone breast form. Your certified mastectomy fitter will help you choose which breast form is suitable for your body type and individual needs.

ABC works with retailers around the country who specialize in taking care of your specific mastectomy needs. These women ensure the best fit for you to restore your confidence and keep you looking and feeling great.  Use our retailer locator to find a location near you.

Silicone breast forms vary in cost depending on the features, but most average around $200-300. Post-surgical and other non-silicone breast forms are around $100.00.

Most Medicare plans and private insurance policies help to cover all or most of the cost. Speak to your certified mastectomy fitter for more information on what coverage your specific plan or policy covers. You can also choose to pay out of pocket, or investigate a medical credit card.

You must have a prescription for your breast form if you plan to use Medicare or your private health insurance to cover the cost. You do not need a prescription if you pay out of pocket.

Yes, breast prostheses are okay to wear through TSA checkpoints at airports as well as other screening situations. Though, you may be subject to a more in-depth security screening. Some women print out and carry this TSA notification card while traveling to show to an agent. For more information, please check the TSA website.

ABC silicone breast forms are made with medical grade silicone.

The size of your breast form will correspond to your bra size. There are some standard correlations. However, these correlations and sizes are merely a starting point in getting fitted in the correct style and size breast form. ABC recommends you make an appointment with a certified mastectomy fitter for a professional bra and breast form fitting. Once fit in a bra, the fitter will fit you with the correct style and size of breast form to restore your symmetry and confidence.

The breast form does not need to be worn in a mastectomy bra. Though, the mastectomy bra is popular for women wearing any type of breast form because the pocket in the mastectomy bra helps to hold the breast form securely to the body. Additionally, mastectomy bras are usually covered by Medicare and private health insurances.
