Samples of Breast Cancer Surgeries/ Asymmetry

commonly seen with wearers of shapers

The 3 surgeries here depicting different asymmetries usually find an optimal fit with our shaper product line. After healing from reconstruction or breast conserving surgery, sometimes women need some kind of thin prosthesis to complete the shape of the breast tissue still remaining for a natural appearance.

If the entire breast was removed or only a little excess tissue remains, our breast form product line may be the better option.

Asymmetry can also occur naturally from failed breast development, sometimes known as Poland’s Syndrome.

This illustration, sometimes identified as a lumpectomy, breast conserving surgery, or partial mastectomy, conserves breast tissue while removing a tumor or lymph nodes from the breast.

Usually reconstructive surgery heals with fullness higher on the chest than the natural breast

A surgery when the plastic surgeon creates a breast shape using an implant, tissue from another place of the body (autologous), or both.

FAQs

about shapers

A shaper is a breast prosthesis that helps restore balance and symmetry after a partial mastectomy, breast conserving surgery, or reconstruction.

ABC works with retailers around the country who specialize in taking care of your specific mastectomy needs. Use our retailer locator to find a location near you.

After you are healed, your doctor will write you a prescription for a breast prosthesis, like a shaper. Shapers are available in many shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. Your certified mastectomy fitter will help you chose which shaper is best for your surgery type, body type, and individual needs.

Silicone shapers vary in cost, but on average are around $250.00.

Most Medicare plans and private-insurance policies help to cover all or most of the cost. Speak to your certified mastectomy fitter for more information on what coverage your specific plan or policy covers. You can also choose to pay out-of-pocket, or investigate a medical credit card.

You must have a prescription for your shaper if you plan to use Medicare or your private-insurance policy to cover the cost. You do not need a prescription if you pay out-of-pocket.

Yes, breast prostheses are okay to wear through TSA checkpoints at airports as well as other screening situations. Though, you may be subject to a more in-depth security screening. Some women print out and carry this TSA notification card while traveling to show to an agent. For more information, please check the TSA website.

ABC silicone shapers are made with 100% medical grade silicone.

The size of your shaper will corresponds to your bra size, surgery type, and where a tissue deficit is present. There are some standard correlations. However, these correlations and sizes are merely a starting point in getting fitted in the correct style and size shaper. ABC recommends you make an appointment with a certified mastectomy fitter for a professional bra fitting. Once fit in a bra, the fitter will fit you with the correct style and size of shaper to restore your symmetry and confidence.

Your shaper does not need to be worn in a mastectomy bra. The mastectomy bra is popular for women wearing any type of shaper because it is usually covered by Medicare and private-insurance policies. Additionally, the pocket in the mastectomy bra helps to hold the shaper securely to the body.
